Different Types of Turtles

Having a turtle as a pet can be so much fun. There are so many varieties of turtles that are available on the pet market. We are going to look at some of the different kinds of turtles and how they look and eat.

The first type of turtle we are going to look at is the chicken turtle. This turtle has a long striped neck as well as yellow stripes on their legs. The shape of these turtles is pear like and the color of their shell can either be brown or olive. These turtles are found living in fresh water. These turtles can be fed on fish, insects, plant leaves and fruits as they are omnivorous in nature. When you decide to keep these turtles always make sure they have access to a pond as they prefer to stay away from dry conditions by burrowing into the mud.

The next type of turtle is called the painted turtle. This turtle got this name due to the fact that it has a very attractive shell that has a base that has a nice design and looks as though it were painted. These turtles are carnivorous in nature meaning they eat other creatures such as fish frogs among other creatures that are found in lakes, rivers and marshes where this turtle is found. If you are to keep this kind of turtle always provide a pond.

Red eared slider turtles can live both in water and on land. They have shown good adaptation on land. That is why they are one of the most popular turtles as pets. The red eared slider does not grow very big. It is generally a small turtle. These turtles will not feed at low temperatures. They are omnivores so they can be fed on plant derived foods as well as on fish and insects.

Map turtles got their name from the fact that they have yellow marks on their heads, necks and legs making them look like a map. These turtles can live both on land and in the water. They require good care as they are a nervous type of turtle and they are subject to stress.
There is the group of turtles known as the mud turtles. These are generally small turtles and they do not require lots of space to keep them. These turtles are very easy to keep all you need to provide for them is a pond that has a basking area and has some rocks that offer a hiding place for the turtles.

Then there are soft shell turtles. Their name can be misleading, they do not have a soft shell but it is as hard as that of other types of turtles. These turtles are the hardest to keep and are thus not very popular amongst beginners.
