Turtle InformationTurtles have been on our planet for more than 200 million years. The earliest turtles had teeth and could not retract their heads. Turtles are found on every continent except Antarctica. About 300 turtle species are alive today, and some of them are highly endangered. In general, turtles live in water or near the water. They spend most of the time in water. Turtles cannot breathe in water, so they have to swim to the surface every few minutes. All turtles have shell which offers them protection.
